Bobby Osborne’s ear-piercing intro to the Osborne Brothers classic still ignites a bluegrass festival audience into a frenzy.

And the legions of fans who still go wild when they hear the start of that anthem will be happy to hear that the still-touring half of the Osbornes has a new CD: “Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-Press: Bluegrass Melodies,” which was released ealier this month.

According to Rounder, “This is the sound of a legendary artist who, at this point in his life, is still creating some of the most interesting and vital work of his long, storied career.” That could be so much sales-pitch hype, but having seen Osborne this summer at the famed Bill Monroe Memorial Bluegrass Festival in Bean Blossom, Ind., we think the publicist might be right on the money.

This is Osborne’s second Rounder album, coming on the heels of his debut for the label, “Try a Little Kindness.”

A couple of tunes sound enticing and offer proof that Bobby Osborne isn’t afraid to tackle the work of music icons. Those cuts are John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” and Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” the latter with help from Rhonda Vincent. The sound clip of the Gill classic on Rounder’s Web site is a real convincer about this CD’s strength.

Bobby Osborne has been on the country and bluegrass scene for more than half a century. And, “…he’s still a more convincing singer than most men half his age,” according to No Depression’s review.

More information is on Rounder’s Web site.
