Honi Deaton to play new Ohio opry
The Glass City Opry, a new bluegrass music venue in the Toledo, Ohio area, is sponsoring its first national touring act in concert next month.
Honi Deaton and Dream will perform at 7 p.m.. Dec. 10 at the opry’s home, the Maumee Indoor Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are being sold in advance, but they will also be available at the door for $15.
The Glass City Opry was launched at the Maumee theater in August. According to Toledo Blade music columnist Brian Dugger, the opry is the brainchild of Sherri Chekal of Redford, Mich., who plays banjo in a band called Deepwater Bluegrass. She co-owns The Bluegrass Journal, a quarterly newspaper delivered in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, and she’s also editor of buckeyebluegrass.com, a Web site focused on Ohio bluegrass fans.
Disappointed that bluegrass was essentially passing Toledo by, Chekal and friends launched the Glass City Opry in August. It offers a bluegrass concert by regional bands the second Monday of each month in Maumee.
“I want to make Toledo the bluegrass capital of Ohio,” she dold Dugger.
The Maumee facility is described as “a state of the art, newly refurbished vintage movie theater” with reclining seats that have cup rests and “plenty of elbow room”
