Rounder features Exclusive interview with Dailey & Vincent

January 15th, 2008 | Category: Bluegrass News

Rounder Records has an exclusive interview with Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent of the new group Dailey Vincent on the labels website. In the Interview the two discuss how they first met, some of their influences and how the duties of running a fulltime touring Bluegrass Band are divided amongst the two.

Below is an excerpt from that interview. You can read the full Daily & Vincent interview on Rounder’s Site here.

Darrin: My role is to road manage, handle stage production, give tour support on the road, musically co-produce our recordings, take care of all production in the studio, and also to cheerlead in and out of the studio. I’m a team player, and whatever needs to be done, I try my best to do it.

Jamie: Yeah – Darrin oversees the music production, scheduling studio time, flights and tour travel arrangements. He also takes care of the sound equipment we need. My role is the lead vocalist, guitar player, and show writer – I work hard to come up with all the banter and between-song commentary and routines. I am also the finance and business director for Dailey & Vincent.Even though both of us have our own duties, we talk everyday and make all final decisions together after being advised from the Dailey & Vincent administration, meaning our manager Don Light, our publicist Karen Byrd, our business management team of Rayburn, Bates, and Fitzgerald, and our attorney David Crow.

Rounder: What was it like debuting the band at the 2007 IBMA World of Bluegrass? Were you nervous?

Darrin: Our first show at IBMA 2007 was an amazing amount of pressure. I had prepared everything for us to just walk up to the mic and hit it, but as my luck would have it, that wouldn’t be the case. We had just bought a new monitor system, but when we stepped up and tested it – nothing. So, Jamie is saying, “I have no vocal! NO VOCAL!” At this point, I want to scream. The announcer is stalling for us to figure it out, and I start randomly hitting buttons. And bingo – I got lucky! We had sound, and after that I don’t know what happened except fortunately the crowd went wild: screaming, clapping, and standing up.

Jamie: It was an awesome experience, but I was scared to death! It was not perfect but our nerves overtook us…

Larry Stephenson Band in Chicago area January 18th

January 15th, 2008 | Category: Bluegrass News
Larry StephensonLarry Stephenson

The Chicago area’s Bluegrass Legends Concerts is hosting a night with the award winning Vocalist and Songwriter Larry Stephenson Friday January 18th. The show will also feature Barb Silverman. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the American Legion Music Hall, 1030 Central St., in Evanston, Ill. Tickets are on sale now by calling 847-573-0443. Details are also available at http://www.chicagobluegrass.com.

Well-regarded among musicians as an outstanding mandolin player, a significant number of industry and media critics regard Larry Stephenson as the premier high lead vocalist in bluegrass music today. His distinctive, crystal clear voice towers over the band vocals, whether an old folk song, a ‘brush arbor’ gospel quartet, or one of his many top ten trios that have graced the national bluegrass song charts.

Larry Stephenson began his musical career in his early teens when he and his father, Ed Stephenson, formed Larry Stephenson & The New Grass in Larry’s hometown of King George, Virginia . He went on to join Bill Harrell & The Virginians in January 1979 playing mandolin and singing high lead and tenor. In June 1983, he moved to a similar role as a member of The Bluegrass Cardinals, remaining until October 1988, when he organized The Larry Stephenson Band.

Larry remains one of the comparatively few headline artists whose solidly tradition-based, contemporary interpretations of the music have kept his recording on the cutting edge of the bluegrass charts, while gaining the respect along the way of first generation legends. Larry continues to record for one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies, as 2008 will mark his 19th Anniversary of making records for the highly respected Pinecastle label family.

Larry has been honored by his home state when he was inducted into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2001, 2004, 2005 & 2006 he won the “Contemporary Male Vocalist Award” at the prestigious SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America ) Convention. Also in 2004, the band clinched the “Song of the Year Award” for the song & title track, “Clinch Mountain Mystery”.

Bluegrass Legends Concerts ( Evanston , IL ) is the only running bluegrass & acoustic music concert series in the Chicago area that features national headline bluegrass talent. The 2007/08 series marks our 9th year of presenting the nation’s top acoustic bluegrass talent
