Group pushing petitions for National Miner’s Day

By Dan Tackett Filed under: Bluegrass News

Call us suckers for a good cause.

The following has absolutely nothing to do with bluegrass music, but we’re gonna step up and give this appeal a pitch.

The Miner’s Day Memorial Association of West Virginia, located in Fairmont, W.Va., is looking for support for its petition drive for an annual commemorative National Miner’s Day for the United States.

Here’s some info and related Web sites submitted by Creed Holden, administrative assistant of the W. Virginia group:

Two of the original “Rocket Boys” of the legendary “Big Creek Missile Agency” are helping lead this effort to create National Miner’s Day.

“Rocket Boy” Roy Lee Cooke is president of the Miner’s Day Memorial Association of West Virginia, the group behind the petition that convinced the West Virginia legislature to create a state holiday for it’s miners, and is now advocating one for the USA.

Renowned author and “Rocket Boy” Homer Hickam passionately supports National Miner’s Day, too.
