Registration is still being accepted for the 3rd Annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp, sponsored by the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Ky.

The camp will be held Sept. 12-14 in Owensboro.Registration will be capped at 50 participants.

The faculty this year includes Richie Brown, Mike Compton, Bobby Osborne, Frank Wakefield, Butch Waller and Roland White. Guest luthier for the camp will be Will Kimble.

“These prestigious, yet accessible, ambassadors of Monroe-style mandolin will present classes and workshops examining issues related to the development and execution of Monroe’s mandolin style, songwriting, musical influences, and other ‘Bill-isms,’”according tor the music museuam’s Web site.

Topics include specific eras in the evolution of Monroe’s style, right-hand technique, and the blues, fiddle, and church music that helped to shape Monroe’s musical expression.

New to this year’s camp is an outing to the Rosine Barn, one of–or perhaps THE–last place Bill Monroe performed, the Web site says. A group photograph will be taken on the barn’s stage, where each camper will have an oppurtunity to perform solo, with others, or as one huge ensemble.

Also new this year is a class on mandolin set-up and maintenance by Kimble, who will also be available Friday and Saturday for basic setups and fret work. Kimble will charge for materials and reasonable fee for each work order but all his work order fees will be donated to the Butch Baldesari Fund.

Appointments for work can be made by requesting a work order form from Mike Lawing at the museum. Your mandolin will get an “appointment” based on the estimated time required to perform the requested service.

According to the museum, here’s what the camp package includes this year:

Intense group lessons in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. You can choose one level or change back and forth throughout the weekend. (These lessons range from meticulous instrument instruction to historical educational discussions.)

A special road trip (transportation included) to the Rosine Barn and General Store.

The faculty concert on Saturday night will be held on what would have been Monroe’s 97th birthday. It will be performed at Woodward’s Cafe, across the foyer from the museum’s entrance. Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:30 pm. The concert is open to the public. Tickets are $20 and available in advance at 888-MY-BANJO or at the door. Limited seating is available.
