Together for 14 years and with eight albums to their credit, Blue Highway is on a roll — no a ride, a train ride to be exact, as in the title of the band’s latest CD, the critically acclaimed “Through the Window of a Train.”

The band is up for IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year award this year, on the heels of their very successful, self-produced CD, which is also up for Album of the Year and Song of the Year for the title track penned by band member Tim Stafford and Grasstowne’s Steve Gulley. The band is also a finalist for the Instrumental Group of the Year award.

Stafford handles guitar work for the group, which also includes Jason Burleson on banjo, guitar and mandolin; Rob Ickes on dobro; Shawn Lane on mandolin and fiddles; and Wayne Taylor on bass. The entire group handles song-writing chores on the new CD and many of the cuts are winning rave reviews for the depth of their lyrics. Winning awards is nothing new to this group, which has compiled a basket full of IBMA honors, two Grammy nominations and a Dove award.

In its July 2008 issue, Bluegrass Unlimited said of the new CD: “… Blue Highway possesses an enviable maturity and remarkable stability. Thus the band both needed and recognized the need for a change of pace with their latest project. Rather than recording in Nashville, Blue Highway headed into Southwestern Virginia to use Alan Maggard’s studio in Big Stone Gap and assumed, for the first time, the producer’s role for themselves. In this way, Blue Highway has achieved a deceptively understated masterpiece with “Through the Window of a Train.”
