You can almost count on Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver showing up on the list of IBMA award finalists. They’re back this year with an Entertainer of the Year nomination and defending their long-held Vocal Group of the Year award. The band has won the vocal group award since 2001. Although personnel changes have been commonplace throughout the years for Lawson’s highly decorated band, he’s been able to maintain a signature sound, especially on the a capella gospel quartet numbers that the group is known for, on stage and in the studio.
His start in the profession realm of bluegrass dates to 1963, when he joined Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys on banjo. After that stint, he played guitar and later mandolin with J.D. Crowe. In 1971, he joined the legendary Country Gentlemen, staying with them for eight years and recording 10 albums with the band.
Lawson continues to handle Quicksilver’s mandolin chores. Others in the group , according to a listing on the band’s MySpace page, are: Brandon Godman on fiddle; Darren Beachley on guitar; Joey Cox on banjo; Josh Swift on dobro; and Carl White on bass. They are featured on the group’s new gospel CD, “Help is on the Way” on the Horizon label.
