Like a group of seasoned soldiers, Blue Highway just keeps coming back to stake more territory. The band, together for 14 years, is up for several International Bluegrass Music Association awards at the upcoming IBMA World of bluegrass, including instrumental group of the year.
Besides winning acclaim for their songwriting and singing abilities, the group consists of instrumental heavyweights, including resophonic guitarist Rob Ickes, who is also up for IBMA Dobro Player of the Year, and Tim Stafford, in line for IBMA’s Guitar Player of the Year award.
Other members of the group are Shawn Lane on mandolin and fiddle, Wayne Taylor on bass and Jason Burleson, who plays banjo, guitar and mandolin.
The entire group’s instrumental skills produce many shining spots in Blue Highway’s current CD, “Through the Window of a Train,” which is winning its share of praise throughout the industry for its songs, many of which were written by band members. The CD, self-produced by the group in a small Virginia studio, is Blue Highway’s eighth album. It marked the first time the band handled production chores. Stafford and Grasstowne’s Steve Gulley wrote the title track.
Through the years, Blue Highway has garnered several IBMA awards and nominations, two Grammy nominataions and a Dove Award.
