Evanston, IL. — Chicago Bluegrass Legends Concerts is excited to present Skaggs Family Recording Artists from Texas, Cadillac Sky, in their first ever Chicago area performance! Ricky Skaggs, and his hot bluegrass label, just released their new CD, Blind Man Walking. Ricky was blown away, and Chicago bluegrass fans will be too once they see this exciting new talent on Sept.12th in Evanston, IL.
Having just been nominated by the IBMA as one the emerging artists of the year, Cadillac Sky’s propulsive brand of bluegrass music is the perfect marriage of tradition and innovation. Their sound is the fruition of bandleader Bryan Simpson’s groundbreaking vision to create a bluegrass band built for the 21st Century. The band first came together in 2002 in Texas when Simpson (mandolin, vocals) teamed up with banjo whiz Matt Menefee. They soon added a veteran influence in guitarist, singer Mike Jump, the virtuoistic, Ross Holmes (fiddle, vocals), and, more recently, the talents of Andy “Panda” Moritz (bass, vocals).
Bryan has crafted songs recorded by country stars including Kenny Rodgers (”My Petition”), George Strait (”If the Whole World Was a Honkytonk”), and George Canyon (”Who Would Be You”), which hit #4 in Canada. Cadillac Sky’s debut album for Skaggs Family Records, Blind Man Walking, includes 13 tracks, all but one written or co-written by Bryan. The songs feature some very un-bluegrass-like sounds including a Zen-like didgeridoo woven together with whispers on the title track.
Cadillac Sky is a band for the new minions of bluegrass lovers. Playing with a swaggering, rock-band energy, they attempt to forge a little new ground in a community that sometimes frowns on anything but classic songs and traditional instrumentation. But, they know and respect their elders, never forgetting where they’ve come from musically. Being rooted in the traditional music, along with prodigious picking and singing skills has allowed the band to win fans on both sides of the traditional/progressive fence. Simpson believes building the band’s sound on the traditions of bluegrass has given Cadillac Sky a solid foundation. One strong enough to support their unique musical perspective. “We definitely have progressive leanings, but we are trying to find our own voice.” It only takes a quick listen to the band’s debut album to hear a band on the verge of greatness.
Cadillac Sky are believers in the power of great music. They know music makes a difference. That’s why they worked so hard to craft the heart-and-soul-stirring songs that make up Blind Man Walking. It’s an amazing debut that heralds the arrival of a brand new star in the acoustic sky.
