Just because Dan Paisley, with his band The Southern Grass, is up for Emerging Artist of the Year honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association, don’t have the audacity to think he’s an overnight sensation. Paisley essentially inherited the band after his father, Bob Paisley, died in 2004. He’s been performing bluegrass with his family in Southern Grass essentially all his adult life.
The new attention on the band can be traced partly to its new Rounder Records CD, “The Room Over Mine,” which is Paisley’s first project on the label. Evidentally, Rounder marketers heard and observed something worth pushing with this CD and gave it a good PR ride. It paid off with “The Room Over Mine” earning high critical acclaim. As a result, Paisley is enjoying some new-found fame.
Following his father’s tradition, Paisley and company pump out hard-driving bluegrass with a touch of old classic country music added to the mix.
Paisley does the lead singing and rhythm guitar work for the group. His band mates include his brother Michael Paisley on bass, two other brothers — fiddler T.J. Lundy and Bobby Lundy on bandjo — and donny Eldreth Jr. on mandolin.
