Rob Ickes & bassist Dave Pomeroy Jammin’ at NAMM 2008.
Rob Ickes, winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Dobro Player of the Year nine times, is back looking for No. 10.
A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Ickes is a member of “Blue Highway,” which is also nominated for several IBMA honors next month. Ironically, he decided he wanted to play Dobro after, as a young teen, he heard Mike Auldridge play. Auldridge is also vying for the Dobro player award at the IBMA convention.
Ickes has become an in-demand session player in Nashville, where he now makes his home. He has four solo albums on Rounder Records and has recently added a two-set instructional DVD to the Homespun Tapes catalogue.
In 1996, Ickes appeared on two Grammy-winning recordings, one with Alison Krauss and the Cox Family and the other, the Jerry Douglas-produced “The Great Dobro Sessions.” Ickes was the youngest player to be invited to participate in that project.
