Missy Raines & the New Hip
EP Release at Norms Roadhouse, Nashville, Tenn.
Missy Raines is a perennial nominee — and winner — of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year Award. She’s claimed that honor seven times and is in contention to win the honor again this year.
Raines has run the gamut in the bluegrass genre, from touring in her early days with Eddie and Martha Adcock, later with Claire Lynch’s Front Porch Band, then in a critically acclaimed duo with guitarist Jim Hurst, and now with her own band, the new hip.
The new hip, honing somewhat of a new edge on contemporary bluegrass, is described as “a fusion of bluegrass virtuousity, jazz-tinged groove and a song-driven sensibility.”
According to one published source, Raines credits the the idea to form her new band to a dream she had in which Bill Monroe, Joe Jackson and jazz bassist Ray Brown jammed together.
