Three personalities are vying for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Broadcaster of the Year honor.

Kyle Cantrell, Katy Daley and Terry Herd are up for the IBMA recognition.

Kyle Cantrell
Cantrell is program director for XM Satellite Radio ’s Bluegrass Junction. Born just outside of Nashville, Tenn., where he grew up listening to the sounds of the Grand Ole Opry on radio giant, WSM. After studying broadcasting and the recording industry at Tennessee public colleges, he landed a job at WSM and, in 1985, became a Grand Ole Opry announcer.

While part of WSM’s team, he helped rebuild the station’s stature with its first classic country music format. In 2003, he won the broadcasting industry’s presigious Golden Voice Award for Outstanding Radio Personality honors.

Katy Daley
Daley hosts a show on the Bluegrass radio Web site, BluegrassCountry.org. Her radio career dates to the days when she worked for the CIA — yes, the government’s spy agency — when she volunteered to do public service announcements and later became a producer for a local bluegrass radio broadcast in the Washington, D.C.,, area.

She later worked at a D.C.-based commercial country music station, where she became public affairs director. In that capacity she won some prestigious broadcast industry awards for documentaries and interviews.

Possessing a bachelor’s degree in communication from The American University, Daley plays clawhammer banjo and is a member of IBMA, Friends of Old Time Banjo and the Capitol Area Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association.

Terry Herd
Herd is the founder of the well known INTO THE BLUE® syndicated radio show and the Bluegrass Radio Network that places a bluegrass show on more than 200 American radio stations. He has won IBMA’s Broadcaster award four times and has served on the organization’s board of directors. He was also the creator of Sirius Satellite Radio’s bluegrass channel, which he served as host and format manager for about six years.

In 2006, Herd accepted an invitation to fill the shoes of WSM’s go-to bluegrass guy, Hairl Hensley, who retired that year. He left Sirius to devote more time to his new role, as well as the expansion of INTO THE BLUE® and the Bluegrass Radio Network.
