Krauss in line for Female Vocalist award from IBMA

A look at the making of Raising Sand, a duet collaboration with rock legend Robert Plant, and country/bluegrass superstar Alison Krauss.
Although her involvement in bluegrass has been somewhat limited in the past year, Alison Krauss still maintains enough stature among her peers to be in the top five finalists for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year Award.
After creating wave after wave of popularity in and out of bluegrass circles in the 1980s and ’90s, Krauss spread her musical wings on a collaboration with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant on a Rounder Records CD, “Raising Sand.”
The CD and tours to promote it have been met with overwhelming success, leading Krauss’s popular bluegrass band, Union Station, to take a hiatus.
A native of central Illinois, Krauss’s career took off in the 1990s with her own unique blend of bluegrass, acoustic and country music, a mix that brought success in several charts.
Rounder Records, riding the wave of popularity from the Robert Plant collaboration, in 2007 released A Hundred Miles or More, a collection drawn from Krauss’ Rounder albums, along with sides recorded for various soundtrack projects and five previously unreleased tracks.
