“Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” concert series presented by Univ. of Kentucky & Lexington Public Library

Lexington, Ky. — The University of Kentucky John Jacob Niles Center for American Music and the Lexington Public Library have announced a new musical collaboration, “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass,” a series of concerts that explore traditional old time and bluegrass music of the Appalachian region.

The six public library events will be presented at 7p.m. on Thursday evenings, at Lexington Public Library – Central Library, prior to UK’s noon concerts on Fridays, in the Niles Gallery of the Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center. The concerts at both locations are free and open to the public.

Beginning next week, the concert series “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” will kick-off its schedule of events. The performance dates for this series are:

  • “Old Time Roots and Bluegrass Flowers” featuring Kentucky Wild Horse, Sept. 18;
  • “Bluegrass Goes to College: The Role of Bluegrass in Education” featuring the bluegrass band of the Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University, Sept. 25;
  • “Home Sweet Home: Original Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” featuring Tim Lake and the Tim Lake Trio, Oct. 16;
  • “A Woman’s Touch: Women in Bluegrass” featuring Gloria Belle, Oct. 30;
  • “Bluegrass in the Twenty-First Century” featuring Hog Operation, Nov. 20;
  • “Hometown Hero Comes Home” featuring J. D. Crowe, Dec. 4.

All six of these “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” events will be presented at the Lexington Public Library - Central Library. Each program will be followed by a free public concert by the artists at noon on that Friday, at the Niles Gallery on UK’s campus.

The “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” concert series is intended to feature bluegrass as a unique American music as well as explore aspects of the genre’s roots, development, and current relevance. The concerts represent a diversity of traditional musical expression from the authentic old time sound to contemporary bluegrass. “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass”offers performances by both local and national artists, and celebrates an art form with strong connections to this city, its region and its people.

The “Bluegrass in the Bluegrass” concert series is made possible through the support of LexArts and the Foundation for Bluegrass Music of the International Bluegrass Music Association.
