Kristin Scott Benson finds herself in familiar territory — surrounded by males — as she is in the finalist list for Banjo Player of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association. She’s the only female artist on the list

A Pinecastle Records artist, Benson can be found these days performing with the Larry Stephenson Band and Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time. Wife of IIIrd Tyme Out mandolinist Wayne Benson, she keeps busy juggling the two’s performing schedules, being a mother and recording.

Growing up in a musical family in South Carolina, Benson started playing mandolin at age 5 and picked up banjo at 13.

For banjo enthusiasts who really do care, Kristin Scott Benson plays a 2007 Sonny Osborne Chief banjo and a 1933 Gibson TB-3 banjo.
