JD Crowe - “lonesome road blues”

What would a finalist list of five nominees for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Banjo Player of the Year be without J.D. Crowe’s name appearing there? Fear not, Crowe fans, he’s on the list again this year.

J.D. Crowe has been a driving influence on bluegrass since his days with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys, when he mixed up his solos with bluegrass and a little rock ‘n’ roll. After running through a couple of other gigs, Crowe formed the band New South in the early 1970s.

According to All Music Guide, the New South “was the most revolutionary bluegrass outfit of its time. Originally, the band consisted of guitarist Tony Rice, mandolinist Ricky Skaggs, dobroist Jerry Douglas, and fiddler/bassist Bobby Sloan.” Crowe recorded his first album for Rounder Records in 1975, and the project “marked a genuine turning point in the sound of the genre.”

J.D. Crowe supposedly retired once in the late 1980s from touring, but he still hits the road quite frequently during the summer festival season. His latest CD, Lefty’s Old Guitar in 2006, won critical claim and was the IBMA’s Album of the Year last year.
