Ron Stewart has a double shot this year at taking home one of the International Bluegrass Music Assocation’s awards for instrumentalists. He’s on the final lists for both banjo player and fiddle player of the year.
The year, 2008, brought something of a career shift for Stewart, who left his longtime gig with J.D. Crowe and the New south to join the Dan Tyminski Band. He mainly plays banjo with Tyminski’s group but also does fiddle and lead guitar work on stage with the band.
A native of southern Indiana, Ron Stewart has been playing music since childhood. He won the Indiana State Fiddle Championship twice and in 2000, was named IBMA’s fiddle player of the year.
Besides maintaining a tour schedule with the Tyminski group, Stewart is in heavy demand as a session player on other artist’s bluegrass recordings.
