The Steep Canyon Rangers, who are nominated for two IBMA Awards this year, head into IBMA World of Bluegrass with a busy schedule for the week. Along with several performances at various after hour showcases, the Steep Canyon Rangers will also be performing during the IBMA Awards show on Oct. 2nd and will appear at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop at 10:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Oct 1st.

The Steep Canyon Rangers also have a special performance at the Station Inn on October 10th with the legendary Curly Seckler, highly regarded as one of the best tenor singers ever in the business. John Ray “Curly” Seckler came to prominence during his stint with Flatt & Scruggs as their tenor singer and mandolin player.

Seckler was with Flatt & Scruggs from 1949 to 1962 with the exception of a couple brief absenses. In that time Curly Seckler recorded over 100 songs with Flatt & Scruggs including some of their most popular songs. Among those were “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” “Salty Dog Blues,” I’ll Stay Around,” “I’ll Go Stepping Too,” and “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke.”

The Steep Canyon Rangers have carved out a special spot in the world of bluegrass music, creating a sound that looks forward and backwards at the same time. First formed in the stairwells and kitchens of Chapel Hill, NC, the Rangers arrive from varied musical backgrounds. On stage and in the studio, the Steep Canyon Rangers have perfected their ensemble approach using fierce dynamics and seamless harmonies. The Rangers base their sound around a stunning catalogue of original songs, drawing on the sounds of early bluegrass, honky tonk, and blues. In 2006 the International Bluegrass Music Association voted Steep Canyon Rangers the Emerging Artist of the Year. The past year also saw the title track “One Dime at a Time” rise to #1 on Bluegrass Unlimited’s National Bluegrass Survey.

In 2006, the Grand Ole Opry welcomed the Rangers for a debut performance. They rang in 2008 on the former Grand Ole Opry stage at the Ryman Auditorium with the Del McCoury Band, as well as guests Jon Fishman (Phish), Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), and songwriter and producer Ronnie Bowman. On the heels of their recent success comes a new release Lovin’ Pretty Women produced by bluegrass heavyweight Ronnie Bowman and engineered by guitarist Wyatt Rice, affirming the band’s arrival at the highest circle of acoustic music.
