Mandolin mania is coming to Minnesota.

The North Shore Music Association is hosting its 18th Master’s Weekend featuring Grammy winner and Monroe-style mandolin disciple Mike Compton and guitarist David Long for a mandolin and workshop and concert, Nov. 7-9 at the Lutsen Resort, on the shore of Lake Superior in Lutsen, Minn.

Check-in is Friday, November 9 with registration and jamming to start the weekend. Saturday is a mandolin and guitar workshop, followed by more jamming and an evening concert by Compton and Long. Sunday’s activities include more jamming before check-out!

Lutsen Resort, the home base of the Master’s Weekend, is the oldest Minnesota resort, well known for a long tradition of warm hospitality going back over 100 years. The historic lodge offers the amenities of a fine hotel, complete with restaurant, pub, pool, whirlpool, sauna and a game room, with charming, Scandinavian-style ambiance.

Mike Compton has received Grammy Award acknowledgements for playing the mandolin on two award-winning projects, “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?” and “Down From the Mountain.” He was also part of the sold out “Down From the Mountain” tours, which included the original soundtrack cast and Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, the Del McCoury Band, and Rodney Crowell.

He was featured prominently on Dr. Ralph Stanley’s CD that was produced by recording industry legend T. Bone Burnette.

Mike Compton conducts numerous workshops and music camps throughout the year. He is currently working on material for the tenor guitar, studying country blues mandolin styles and taking fiddle lessons. He is a prolific composer and treasures his memories of a friendship with his mentor, Bill Monroe.

Cost for the workshops is $30. Concert tickets, at $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and younger will be available on-site.

Each year, the Master’s Weekend features different artists and has a focus on different instruments. Last year’s Master’s Weekend featured the vocal harmonies of 3 Fox Drive.
