Dehlia Low

Dehlia Low

Asheville, NC — Dehlia Low is one of Asheville, North Carolina’s newest bluegrass bands to hit the scene. With a repetoire featuring “honest, hard-hitting vocals and tight harmonies” the group is hoping to garner some attention and make a move onto the national bluegrass scene with their self-titled EP.

The group’s sound draws from the earliest days of bluegrass and appalachian mountain music. Their material features originals written by the group as well as classic, modern and old country influenced strongly by artists such as Hazel Dickens, The Stanley Brothers, James King, Olla Belle Reed and others.

Dehlia Low came together, as many bands do in the bluegrass scene, in 2007 through local bluegrass jam sessions in the Asheville area.

In a short span of time Dehlia Low has been busy performing both regionally and on the national scene with bookings for the 2009 Durango Meltdown in Durango, CO and the the 2009 edition of Appalachian Uprising in Scottstown, OH.

Anya Hinkle (vocals, fiddle), originally from Blacksburg, Virginia, is a powerful and soulful country vocalist and spirited fiddler. Previously a recording artist on The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Musical Heritage Trail, Anya has been singing and playing fiddle and guitar since childhood. Dehlia Low performs a number of Anya’s original songs.

Aaron Ballance (dobro, pedal steel) hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and since moving to Asheville in 2006 has recently been an in-demand studio musician there on dobro and pedal steel. Aaron has been playing music since he was 13 and has been involved in many different musical collaboratives. He contributes original instrumentals and vocal songs to the group.

Stacy Claude (vocals, guitar), on guitar and vocals, of South Carolina started singing in church choirs as a child, which eventually led to her interest in the guitar and acoustic music. She has performed and recorded in Utah and Colorado with Blue String Theory, and in the Asheville area with Blue Roan. Her clear and strong singing brings down the house and she contributes a number of original songs to Dehlia’s set list.

Bryan Clendenin (vocals, mandolin) of Hurricane, West Virginia is incredibly versatile and talented on mandolin and also contributes vocals and original music to Dehlia Low. Bryan has been playing mandolin for over 10 years and has performed all over the Colorado region with his bluegrass band The Stanley Tones. In 2007 Bryan decided to return to his roots in Appalachia and bring his talents to Dehlia.

Greg “Stig” Stiglets (bass) is the newest member of the band, keeping time on the upright bass, although he’s mainly a fast-fingered flatpicking bluegrass guitar player. Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Stig moved to Asheville in 1999 and quickly became a member of the prevalent network of bluegrass musicians there. Stig contributes vocals and songwriting talents to the band making Dehlia Low a songwriting tour-de-force.
