Editor’s Note — The following events are not open to the public.
The Bluegrass Hotel, a major video and recording project, is rolling along, with a full slate of activities scheduled in mid-December in Kentucky.
The project gets its name from an old Victorian mansion in Louisville, Ky., that was a key component of the bluegrass scene and the home of some major music artists during the Newgrass era of the 1970s.
The project will go full-tilt, beginning this month, when Sam Bush, Dan Crary, Curtis Burch, Jim McGuire, Bill Millet, John Jump, Fred Bartenstein and Hazel Johnson are slated to meet up with film and audio crews for on-location filming in Bowling Green and Barren County, Ky.
Key players in the project will gather at noon at the Galt House Hotel and Suites in Louisville, Ky., for a press conference about the project and a related March 6 concert to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Immediately after the press conference, the group will head out for filming and recording. Bartenstein will interview artists, and film crews will get their shot at a room full of vintage bluegrass instruments, along with interviews with noted collectors George Gruhn and Harry Sparks.
Crews will also tape jam sessions during the afternoon.
The group will gather at the Rudyard Kipling for The Bluegrass Hotel Christmas party, which will also be filmed. The Rudyard Kipling is a legendary Louisville restaurant with a small concert hall and theater attached.
The Bluegrass Alliance tribute band will perform. It includes Dan Crary, Danny Jones, Buddy Spurlock, Glenn Lawson, Jack Lawrence, Tony Williamson, Chuck Nation and others.
The Buzzard Rock String Band . Its members are Harry Sparks, Harry Bickel, George Gruhn and Doc Hamilton
The Bluegrass Hotel All-Star band, featuring Sam Bush, winds down the festivities. Performers include J.D. Crowe, John Cowan, Curtis Burch, Tony Rice and Dan Crary.
The performances will be captured by a three-camera, high-definition video setup and digital multi-track sound recording.
