Steve Gulley, one of modern bluegrass’s highly regarded performers, has opened The Curve Studio, a professional recording facility in Cumberland Gap in east Tennessee.

“We are an all-digital hard disk recording studio with the capacity to track a full five-piece band at once or individually track single musicians,” Gulley says on the studio’s Web site.

“Whether you’re looking for a singer/songwriter demo or a full production album, The Curve has all aspects of the audio spectrum covered.”

The 1,200-square-foot studio is nestled on Gulley’s mountain-setting property.

“We’ve been recording here over the past few months with great results,” said Gulley, a founding member of Mountain Heart and also one of the founders of his new group, Grasstowne. “We have some great equipment along with a variety of really good sounding rooms.”

Gulley said the studio is a venture between himself and “a couple of my best friends.”

Gulley, meanwhile, is teaming up with another good friend — Tim Stafford of Blue Highway — in producing a duet CD at the studio. It won’t be the duo’s first effort together. They co-wrote “Through the Window of a Train,” recorded by Blue Highway and named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Song of the Year in 2008.

At the studio, Gulley is serving as director of operations and producer. Others on staff are Mark Laws, studio supervisor and in charge of graphics and design; and Bryan Turner, operations coordinator and engineer.

Gulley said bands and individuals recording at The Curve Studio also have the the option of utilizing professional production services and seasoned studio musicians.

The facility isn’t limiting itself to exclusively recording bluegrass. It’s advertised as “capable to suit the recording demands of a wide variety of musical styles, from bluegrass to country, to rock and gospel.”

The Curve Studio offers a wide range of services, including mixing and mastering and graphic arts work for CD packaging. It also does audio restoration work on vinyl and cassette tapes that the studio cleans up and transfers to CD for clients. In addition, the studio wants to build a clientele for commercial radio spots and voice-overs.

The studio’s Web site contains plenty of information about the recording and sound equipment being used, recording rates and terms of payment.
