The rookie duo of Dailey & Vincent swept the 35th annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America awards show Sunday in Nashville, Tenn., just like they did last October at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual awards gala.
With their band in existence for only one year, they easily qualify for the rookie status. But make no mistake, the leaders Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent are seasoned bluegrass pros with crafty business skills who carefully plotted their first-year success on the foundation of their self-titled, debut CD.
The group, which also includes Adam Haynes on fiddle, Jeff Parker on mandolin and banjo player Joe Dean Jr., was named overall Bluegrass Band of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year and Contemporary Gospel Group of the Year.
They also had the Song of the Year for “By the Mark.” Individually, Dailey was named Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year and Vincent won Bass Fiddle Performer of the Year.
Rhonda Vincent was voted Entertainer of the Year and Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year.
Virginia-based Nothin’ Fancy captured one of SPBGMA’s most coveted awards, The Entertaining Group of the Year, for the second consecutive year.
Nothin’ Fancy was all smiles when band members accepted the honor.
“We couldn’t do this without the fans,”, said Mike Andes, the band’s lead vocalist and mandolin player. “We’re just down-home folks. The only difference between us and the fans is, we stand on the stage.”
Nothin’ Fancy performed earlier in the evening at the show and received the only standing ovation of the night.
The award comes on the heels of Pinecastle Records’ release last month of Nothin’ Fancy’s first all-gospel project and eighth CD, Lord Bless This House.
The Grascals walked away from the SPBGMA show with two top awards including Album of the Year for Keep on Walkin’ and Instrumental Group of the Year. Kristin Scott Benson, the group’s newest member, was named Banjo Player of the Year.
In other recognitions, James King was named Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year and Jeanette Williams won Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year.
Tom T. and Dixie Hall earned Songwriters of the Year honors.
While the IBMA awards are based on votes by the group’s membership, the SPBGMA awards are selected by fan voting.
Other 2009 SPBGMA winners are:
Fiddle Performer of the Year: Hunter Berry
Dobro Performer of The Year: Phil Leadbetter
Guitar Performer of The Year: Josh Williams
Mandolin Performer of The Year: Alan Bibey
Traditional Gospel Group of The Year: Paul Williams & The Victory Trio
The awards show was held at the Music City Sheraton Hotel in Nashville and was the concluding event of SPBGMA’s annual convention.
