The Greencards this week released “Fascination,” their first CD on the Sugar Hill label.
Not exactly a born-and-bred Monroe disciple band, the trio includes two Australians and a Brit. Despite their global background, The Greencards have been consistent hitters on the Americana music charts. And they concede to having a passion for true bluegrass.
“Fascination” was produced by Jay Joyce, who’s best known outside the bluegrass genre, working with Patty Griffin, John Hiatt, Derek Trucks, and The Duhks.
According to the band’s publicist, “Fascination describes the essence of this band. It was, first of all, their fascination with American roots music – bluegrass especially – that drew singer/bassist Carol Young and multiple string-instrument master Kym Warner from Australia, and violinist/violist Eamon McLoughlin from the U.K., to Austin, Texas, where they began performing together, and later to their current home base in Nashville.
“That urge to challenge themselves, to test the limits of any established genre, guided them on their first three albums. It kept them focused as they accumulated awards and acclamations, from the Americana Music Award in 2006 for Emerging Artist of the Year through tours with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to last year’s “Best Country Instrumental Performance” Grammy nomination for ‘Mucky The Duck,’” a track from their 2008 CD, Viridian.
“Fascination” can be ordered by visiting The Greencards online.

I am a huge fan of The Greencards, I reviewed their first 2 CDs on Dualtone. This is a huge departure from their refreshing new grass sound. I just received their first 2 Cds fron Dualtone, They were nice to send them to me, btw, they sound so much better on my new disc player. I listened to “Weather and Water”. What a great ,airy refreshing sound, plenty of great songs with the help of Bryan Sutton and Pat Flynn on guitar. Recorded by Gary Pacsosa, and mastered by Doug Sax. Very High Quality, but so is this new one, just a bit more eclectic, Not much in the way of vocals here and the songs kind of drag along in a way. They are exploring a new type of sound, hard to explain, very sparse, I still love these guys, this is their 4th CD, and only 1/4 of their material. Best to them
