Cherryholmes and Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper will perform at 2 p.m. June 6 at bluegrass’s most unusual venue, Bluegrass Underground in the World Famous Cumberland Caverns near McMinnville, Tenn.
That show will be a prelude to the Underground’s first annual Fourth of July celebration, observing the birth of America, but also the 53rd year Cumberland Caverns has been a show cave.
WSM will broadcast the special edition live from the Volcano Room with six artists who represent the best in Bluegrass and Roots music: The John Cowan Band, The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, The Josh Williams Band, Missy Raines and The New Hip, Pokey Lafarge and Christabel and The Jons.
For the special celebration, show promoters are erecting a second stage above ground. All artists will play a set at both stages, below and above ground.
All-day tickets are $30 for both stages and $15 for children 12 and younger. Kids 5 and younger are admitted free.
Billed as a family event, the Fourth of July celebration will also feature free caricature drawings for kids by Tracy Latham, a kids play area with games, inflatables, snowcones, cotton candy and other activities and hourly drawings in the Volcano Room for prizes.
“This summer Bluegrass Underground will host some great bluegrass music,” said Todd Mayo, affiliated with Loblolly Ventures, which produces the shows. “We are excited to host Cherryholmes and Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper. The patrons in attendance are in for a real treat on June 6. It’ll be a cool musical experience underground at 56 degrees and some hot pickin’.”
Bluegrass Underground is a live concert and radio show held inside the Volcano Room — an amphitheater 333 feet underground, one of the most acoustically pure natural spaces on or under the earth.
Cumberland Caverns, a registered National Natural Landmark, attracts thousands of visitors from across the nation and around the world year-round. First discovered in 1810, Cumberland is Tennessee’s largest show cave. It offers daily walking tours, spelunking adventure trips and overnight camping in the cave.
Bluegrass Underground is taped once a month. Tickets can be purchased at the Web site, www.bluegrassunderground.com.
Bluegrass Underground shows can be heard on 650 WSM and online at wsmonline.com each Saturday night from 5 to 6 p.m.
World-famous Cumberland Caverns is located in the heart of Middle Tennessee, centrally located between Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville. The cave is just off Highway 8, six miles southeast of McMinnville via US 70-S, between Nashville and Knoxville, or via Highway 55 from I-24 at Manchester, between Nashville and Chattanooga.
