A short documentary of the ‘Old Enough’ recording with The Raconteurs, Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, TN
14-time Grammy® winner Ricky Skaggs has earned his fifth consecutive #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass albums chart with “Ricky Skaggs Solo (Songs My Dad Loved),” out now on Skaggs Family Records.
The release of “Songs My Dad Loved” has been met with a wave of critical acclaim. In their 4 1/2-star review, Country Weekly says “Solo” is a singular pleasure,” while Billboard says the album “truly feels like an intimate fly-on-the wall field recording.”
Ricky Skaggs was taught to play the mandolin by his father Hobert Skaggs. Hobert instilled his love of deep, pre-bluegrass mountain music in his young son, and Ricky’s look back at these beloved tunes has resulted in a powerful landmark of American roots music.
Playing every instrument and singing every note on the album, Skaggs brings a raw, emotional honesty to the songs. By coming home to the music that meant so much to him as a child, Skaggs has tapped into a wellspring of passion that he channels into every tune. It’s as though he willed himself back to his family’s house in Kentucky, and in doing so found the purest expression of his music to date.
Skaggs recently spoke to NPR “All Things Considered” host Melissa Block about the album. You can listen to the Ricky Skaggs NPR interview here.
Next up for Ricky Skaggs is the CMA awards on November 11, where he’s a nominee in the “Musical Event of the Year” category for his collaboration with Jack White and the Raconteurs on a bluegrass-inspired version of “Old Enough.”
