Updated — alert reader Jeff Boudreau pointed at to us that it is located in El Cerrito, Ca. at 10341 San Pablo Ave. — thanks for catching our mistake.
The growing popularity of downloading music via the Internet has cut into the sale of CDs — and the trend is being felt at one San Francisco area tradition — the Down Home Music Store.
The shop has been serving Bay Area roots music fans for 33 years with CDs, DVDs, LPs, books, 45s, 78s, cassettes, posters, photos and in-store concerts during that three-decade period.
“Unfortunately the steadily-declining sale of music via pre-recorded sound carriers like CDs, has made it very difficult for retailers to survive,” store owner Chris Strachwitz, said in a notice sent to music media outlets. “Down Home Music is no exception.”
Strachwitz, who also owns Arhoolie Records, and store manager John McCord hope to keep the shop open on a limited basis, but the future is uncertain.
“We would like to make music lovers everywhere aware of what is in stock at Down Home, and if you are interested in receiving weekly email bulletins telling you about items of interest, send Down Home Music your e-mail address to mail@downhomemusic.com.”
Strachwitz noted the store also has an excellent rating on eBay.
“Mail orders will be promptly dispatched with thanks, love and a smile,” he said.
Down Home’s inventory is especially focused on old-timey music, blues, soul, country, cajun and zydeco, jazz, historic gospel and rhythm and blues.
