Buncombe Turnpike, an Asheville, N.C., bluegrass band is making some inroads on CMT’s Music City Madness.

The group’s entry, “Where The Hills Are Blue,” has been accepted into the network’s online video contest.

Up against many mainstream type country acts, it will take bluegrass fans to help them progress up the ladder, according to an e-mail from the group.

Written by band leader Tom Godleski and cousin Kenny Fowler, “Where The Hills Are Blue” is the first cut on their newly released CD, Ditch Diggin’ Blues. In the video, cousins Tom, Kenny, and Andy (Tom’s brother) go back to the actual campsite that they used as children.

Lead singer and bass player Godleski began what would become the band Buncombe Turnpike in the fall of 1997. With three albums under its belt, the band has grown from their original four-piece lineup into an energetic bluegrass quintet featuring the 2004 national champion Tony Reece, on resonator guitar. Darrell Earwood plays banjo, Micah Hanks is on guitar and Caleb Hanks plays mandolin. All five players are North Carolina natives.

Buncombe Turnpike plays a variety of h tunes ranging from traditional and contemporary bluegrass to gospel and hand-crafted originals.
