Here’s a reminder of something special and definitely worthwhile — and something BluegrassJournal.com wholeheartedly endorses. The Friends of Eddie and Martha Adcock are hosting a benefit show at the Station Inn in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday (Oct. 25).

The event, carrying a suggested $20 donation at the door, starts at 7 p.m.

Deering Banjo has joined the effort by donating a Goodtime banjo that will be raffled that evening. The raffle tickets will be sold at the door for $10.

“Please invite all your friends, and let everyone know that donations are welcome at any time, for those unable to attend the event,” Patty Mitchell, one of key benefit organizers, said in an e-mail.

Contributions can be made payable directly to:

The Adcocks have been on the bluegrass and American music scene for decades. Eddie gained perhaps his biggest chunk of fame with The Country Gentlemen, a pioneering newgrass/bluegrass band that came on the scene in the Sixties.

Eddie and Martha have performed in various bands together, and have performed as a duo for many years.

Friends of the Adcocks — and they have legions — are organizing the benefit on the heels of Eddie’s highly publicized brain surgery last year. The surgery was necessary to address tremors that had developed in his hands, definitely not a malady to have when one plays banjo and guitar for a living.

Eddie remained awake during the surgery and, on cue from his neurosurgeon, did some plunking during the procedure on his Goodtime banjo. Video footage of the surgery made the national news and was spread throughout the Internet.

The surgery put the Adcocks on the sidelines of touring and performing for several months, resulting in a significant loss of income. Sunday’s benefit, hopefully, will help fill up their resulting financial shortfall.

Already on board to perform at Sunday’s show are Jerry Douglas, Jesse McReynolds, Missy Raines and The New Hip, the Harley Allen band, Randy Waller, The Whites and Don Wayne Reno.
