Berkeley, CA — Nell Robinson will perform a December 10 show featuring songs for her debut “Nell Robinson in Loango,” at the Freight & Salvage Coffee House . The Show begins at 8:00 p.m and tickets are available through the Freight & Salvage Web site for $18.50. Freight & Salvage Coffee House is located at 2020 Addison Street, Berkeley, CA 94704.
From singing alone in a car just a few years ago to performing with her band onstage in 2009, East Bay singer Nell Robinson has traveled a long way from her close-knit family farm near Loango, Alabama (referred to in the album title). It’s a small rural town in south Alabama, where several generations of Nell’s family have lived. Sweet memories of a childhood visiting the local store that sold bottled cokes and boiled peanuts…a town where almost every house had “kinfolk” in it. This album is a tribute to her grandmothers, Nell Robinson and Thelma Bates.
Nell’s debut album, Nell Robinson in Loango, was produced by incredibly talented Grammy-Award-winning bluegrass community stalwarts, Laurie Lewis and Jim Nunally. The CD startles the listener with its fine, pure, honest vocals and harmonies, traditional bluegrass standards, old country tunes and original material. These genres are skillfully combined with a tint of country swing and blues. The result is a recording showcasing Nell’s warm, sexy vocals and highlights a sharp, clear, fresh approach for her creative offerings.
“Nell Robinson’s songs have a love of life and a joy of discovery that will make you pull up a rocker and rest a spell.” — Brenda Hough Bluegrass Breakdown, CA Bluegrass Association
Nell Robinson’s back-up band at the Freight & Salvage performance will include: Jim Nunally (guitar & slide steel guitar), Andrew Conklin (string bass) and Keith Little (banjo & guitar), Tony Marcus (vocals), and a few very special surprise guests! Nell’s 1930s sisters’ duo with Cary Sheldon, The Henriettas, will amaze you with a couple old-time yodels, and Nell and the band will reprise and put a fresh spin on a couple Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash tunes.
