Does Charlie Daniels Play a Mean Fiddle?
Today’s question: Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?
Well, if you know Charlie Daniels like a lot of bluegrass and country music fans know Charlie Daniels, you obviously have the answer to that question. If you’re the rest of the world and you’ve spent any part of the post-Christmas holiday season in front of the TV, you also know the answer, thanks to a new GEICO commercial featuring Daniels that’s appearing all over TV Land these days.
It’s part of a new GEICO ad campaign, called Rhetorical Questions. During the last 15 years, everyones heard GEICO’s famous tagline: 15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance.
With that in mind, GEICO’s message in the new ad campaign has a twist. The idea: People know this tagline so well, the marketing firm behind the ad campaign could phrase it as a rhetorical question.
Each spot in the campaign begins with an investigative reporter-type host, played by Mike McGlone (from The Brothers McMullen,) asking the question: Could switching to GEICO really save you 15% or more on car insurance?
Well, as in the Charlie Daniels’ spot, the comeback line is: “Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?”
Other lines in the campaign include:
- Is Ed “Too Tall” Jones too tall?
- Does Elmer Fudd have trouble with the letter R?
- Did The Waltons take way too long to say goodnight?
Obviously, GEICO’s answer to all of the above is a resounding yes.
