John Titus is scratching his head — but he’s grinning.
John Titus has been recording bluegrass bands in Camden, W.Va., for several years in his J&V Audio studio. Now, he has a brand new recording studio and new equipment to offer his clients.
So, why the head-scratch and grin?
“Surprisingly, I have had my busiest year ever,” Titus wrote in a recent note to BluegrassJournal. com. “I’m not sure why, with the economy the way it is.”
But Titus’s job isn’t to wonder why, it’s just to put down good-sounding, clean tracks and help bands get CDs packaged and in front of fans. He believes he’s better equipped to do that than he’s ever been.
“I now have a 20- by 34-foot log building to record out of,” he said. “I have also upgraded my recording equipment. I now have custom built mic pre-amps designed for acoustic music, as well as a Roland 2480 recorder.
“The new studio has enabled me to record much of the group live while still maintaining a high degree of track separation,” he added. “I do most of my recording using ribbon mics. I have found that they are the truest mics to correctly capture the sound of acoustic instruments. As a bluegrass musician myself, I have a true understanding of what the instruments sound like.”
Titus has been involved in the production side of bluegrass for many years, both in the live sound arena as well as a recording engineer. Out of his new studio, he also offers mixing services as well as short run CD duplication — and he is equipped to provide live sound for Bluegrass festivals.
J&V Audio also offers CD cover design services.
When it comes to recording services, Titus is operating under a flat-rate system: $100 per song, which includes recording, mixing and mastering.
A full range of his services, along with price listing photos of his new studio, are on his Web site: http://jvaudio2.ieasysite.com/j&vaudio.htm.
