Darren Beachley & Legends of the Potomac will celebrate the release with an official CD release show at The Old Lucketts Schoolhouse, just outside of Leesburg, VA on March 27th.

According to Darren Beachley, “I like old things with personality and history and the old schoolhouse surley has that. I have been seeing music there and performing there since the 70’s. It’s gonna be a great time and I do encourge those who are coming to get there early. There are no advance sales and it will sellout.”

“It was rumored that Jamie Dailey would be making an apperance, I have given strict instructions to The Virginia State Police that he is to be arrested and taken straight to the Kung Pow Chinese Buffet.”

According to Beachley, “Takeoff” should have enough variety that it will appeal to a wide cross-section of Bluegrass fans. “We are really happy with the way it turned out.” “We have a lot of new material on here and I feel there is a little something for everyone. This project will really establish what our approach to music is all about”

“Takeoff” includes new songs from Paula Breedlove, Brad Davis, Rhonda Gunn, Wayne Ashmore, Dave Dias and Robert Gately along with some older classic material.

Darren Beachley breaks down “Takeoff” track-by-track

“The Other Side of Lonely” is the opening track and it’s a feel good song. I love the lyric line to it and the chord flow of it.”

“Lightning Rod” is one that the first time I heard it, It was a must have. It has that contempory spooky feel to it.”

“Love You Don’t Know” was released as our first single back in October. When the band first got togther it was one of those songs that we all felt strongly about”.

“The tune that Paula wrote with Rhonda Gunn is called “Jenny”. When we listened to demos all the guys liked it but Tom Gray’s wife Sally was very sure that “Jenny” would be a song that we would have to do every night we perform. It has a really wierd twist in the love story.”

“Last Ride” is a song written by our old friend Wayne Ashmore from up here near Baltimore. It’s a song that talks about all the great things. Love, trains and hobos.”

“Don Rigsby, Tom T. and Dixie Hall contributed “Tall Weeds and Rust”. I was on facebook one day talking to Don and he said you really need to hear this song. I contacted Tom T. and Dixie. They sent the demo and I loved the lyrics. Once we started working it up it became such a strong bluegrass song. The lyrics talk about something that’s happening all over… which is urban sprawl. Everywhere you look the old is being torn down or dug up and replaced with the new. This song address’ that so well. We were even lucky enough to get ole Tom T. do do a guest vocal on it with us.”

“We did Robert Gately’s “More Than I Can Bear.” It’s Bluegrass right in your face. I have always loved Robert’s writing since before I was with Doyle even.”

“Some of the hidden chestnuts that we did were The Louvins’ “You’ll Forget”. I have always loved that song and it fits me pretty well vocally.”

“We did a song that Bonnie Owens and Merle Haggard did at one point in the mid 60’s called “Forever and Ever”, And it’s got a great bluegrassy feel to it.”

“There is one song that came in at the last minute. ” You Could Always Come Back” is a Steve Wairner song that I heard on the way to the studio one day and liked it so well we decided to cut it. It has a more acoustic country-type feel to it.”

“I do have to confess I did do one Osborne Brothers tune in a nod to my favorites. “Miss You Mississippi”, is a song, which when I was a kid was the first single I got when I received a new record player one year for Christmas. It’s always been in my head. Of course, it was written by Wendy Thatcher.”

Darren Beachley & Legends of the Potomac are, Darren Beachley, Mike Auldridge, Tom Gray, Norman Wright and Mark Delaney.

“I have to say that I am so happy with the work ethic all the guys and guest displayed on this CD. We had Rachel Johnson and Ray Legere do some guest fiddlin’ on the CD. Nate Leath a little percussion. Tom Mindte and all the folks over at Patuxent work so hard for us, I know we were really being picky at times but Tom hung right in there with us and never let us be anything but us.” – Darren Beachley

He says things in songs that have never been said before. He paints pictures that have never been seen. I can’t believe that I ever got to meet him, much less work with him. He’s a world-class genius.”

Lauderdale will make two appearances Thursday, March 18, at the South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. He has an afternoon show at the Ruby Stardust Lounge at Maria’s Taco Express at 3 p.m., then a gig later that evening at the Americana Music Association’s Showcase at Antone’s at 8 p.m.

Patchwork River, written at Hunter’s California home, was produced by longtime production partner Tim Coates and Doug Lancio, who also plays guitar. James Burton, Al Perkins, Ron Tutt, Garry Tallent, Kenny Vaughan, and Patty Griffin round out an all-star cast by contributing their musical talents to the record.

This marks the second album written by Lauderdale and Hunter, who first met when Lauderdale was preparing to record I Feel Like Singing Today, the first album he recorded with Dr. Ralph Stanley. Lauderdale knew that Hunter and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia were fans of Stanley, so he approached Hunter about contributing lyrics to the album. From there, the two became friends and wrote more than 30 songs together during Hunter’s three-month visit to Lauderdale’s Nashville home in 2001; 13 of those tunes wound up on the 2004 release, Headed For the Hills.

Lauderdale was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009 in the “Best Bluegrass Album” category for his album, Could We Get Any Closer, along with nominations for “Best Country Album” for George Strait’s Twang for which he co-wrote two songs (including the title track). He was also included in “Best Contemporary Folk Album” for Secret, Profane, & Sugarcane by The Sugarcanes, Elvis Costello’s band of which Lauderdale is a member.

Lauderdale has previously won two “Best Bluegrass Album” Grammy’s: in 2002 for his Lost In the Lonesome Pines collaboration with Ralph Stanley and in 2008 for his album, The Bluegrass Diaries.

He has written songs for several artists including the Dixie Chicks, Solomon Burke and George Jones, and has numerous hits with Patty Loveless, George Strait, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack and others.

To call what Denver-based guitarist Grant Gordy does with the music he loves, the music his dad turned him on to, the music by the artists who would become his heroes and colleagues — to call it listening would be inaccurate. He hasn’t been just listening to it; he absorbs it, digests and dissects it, explores it to the very edge, feels it, knows it.

From the gift of an A&L acoustic guitar from his father, a flat-picking guitarist and composer who shared time and technique; through Led Zeppelin rock and Grateful Dead roll; to time in bands, mastering improvisation and other concepts, to loving the blues, bebop, modern jazz, straight-ahead bluegrass and the classics of Bach and Beethoven: What Grant Gordy actually has been doing is continuous study.

In there was 1996’s DGQ-20, the three-disc set by the David Grisman Quintet, the album Gordy says completely changed his life. “I was hearing all these cool new chords and complex arranged tunes and great players and something about it just fit for me. It even got me started thinking about writing my own tunes,” he says.

Grant Gordy put together his own quartet in 2006 that gigged for a couple of years and then got the call from David “Dawg” Grisman to sub in and then ultimately join the Quintet as guitarist. Says Grisman of Gordy, “[He] belongs to the new elite family of American acoustic practitioners who are pushing the ever-expanding envelope of a musical frontier … Bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, classical and even ‘dawg’ are all audible influences in Grant’s musical vision … [His] guitar stylings offer a rare blend of flat-picking virtuosity, jazz exploration and classical sensibility — all displayed here in the setting of his choosing.”

Visit www.BluegrassJournal.com to listen to audio clip.

That “setting” is Grant Gordy’s self-titled debut album, which includes his “Blues To Dawg” that he invited Grisman to contribute his signature mandolin playing to. He also brought in Jayme Stone (banjo) — with whom he’d recorded and toured Canada and the Eastern U.S. in Stone’s Africa To Appalachia band with Malian musician Mansa Sissoko. Also part of his studio quartet: fiddle phenom Alex Hargreaves; virtuoso Paul Kowert on bass, currently playing with Chris Thile’s Punch Brothers; and Dominick Leslie on mandolin, who’d been part of Gordy’s Denver-based quartet and currently attends Berklee School of Music.

“At heart, I’m really an improviser; that’s what very first drew me to playing music — the idea that you can make things up as you go along — but I’m also very interested in composition,” Grant Gordy says. “I like the idea of a group of musicians having as much room and freedom to explore and improvise as they want, but within a context of a compelling arrangement that can be exciting for, and draws in, the listener. It’s also my hope that even though the pieces on the record reflect a wide range of interests and influences, they still sound like a cohesive statement from one composer.”

Grant Gordy’s self-titled release will be available in May 11, 2010.

Rural Rhythm Records is very proud to announce the upcoming March 23, 2010 album releases of two first generation bluegrass legends: “Bluegrass 1963” by Reno & Smiley with special guests Carter and Ralph Stanley, and “Bluegrass 1971” by Mac Wiseman with special guest, Lester Flatt & Chubby Wise. These are the first two album projects by a new and exciting joint venture between Rural Rhythm Records and Ronnie Reno. These historic albums will be available for purchase wherever bluegrass music is sold including; Walmart, Amazon, Borders, iTunes, Rhapsody, e-music, County Sales, Music Shed, plus the Rural Rhythm Records website.

“Bluegrass 1963,” produced by Ronnie Reno, is a welcomed treasure for those lucky enough to have seen and heard Reno & Smiley perform on their legendary “Top O’ the Morning” daily TV show in Roanoke, Virginia during the early 1960’s. This 18 song collection features their long time sideman, The Tennessee Cut-Ups, Mac Magaha on fiddle, John Palmer on bass, guitarist Steve Chapman, plus a young Ronnie Reno on mandolin. There are fine renditions of their classics like “I Know You’re Married,” “I’m the Talk of the Town,” “Love Please Come Home,” “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could,” and “I’m Using My Bible for a Roadmap.”

Also featured on the album are guest spots from none other than The Stanley Brothers (Ralph and Carter) performing the classic “In the Pines,” “Nine Pound Hammer,” and Ralph joining Don Reno for a twin banjo workout on “Home Sweet Home.” A special album highlight is the four-part harmony performance of “Over in the Gloryland” with Ralph & Carter Stanley joined by Reno & Smiley and their full band. ‘As I look back some 47 years ago when we recorded this, I can’t help but think of my feelings on the music we were playing. I was 16, playing mandolin in a great band on TV and recording hit records. I guess I thought all bands sounded and played like Reno & Smiley. Little did I know I was playing in one of the greatest bluegrass bands of all time.” said album producer, Ronnie Reno.

“Bluegrass 1971,” features Mac Wiseman with special guests Lester Flatt & Chubby Wise. Mac Wiseman has been a very important part of the Country and Bluegrass music scene for many decades recording a tremendous amount of successful albums that have contained a long list of big hits in both genres. Towards the end of 1970, Mac Wiseman and Lester Flatt talked about teaming up for an album that would re-create the mood and spirit of the late 1940s. Lester had split acrimoniously from Earl Scruggs, so Lester and Mac began touring and recording together. During this period, their albums were musically and commercially successful including their album, “Lester ‘N Mac” reaching #42 on the Billboard Top Country Album Chart.

This star-studded bluegrass album was recorded in 1971 at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in Kentucky during this historic collaborative period between the two. “Bluegrass 1971” gives us a historic treat as these bluegrass legends perform three classic songs together with Lester’s Nashville Grass Band, which included Paul Warren, Josh Graves, Roland White, Haskel McCormick and Johnny Johnson, special guest, Howdy Forrester, and nine classic songs performed with Mac and his band, The Shenandoah Valley Cut-Ups that included: Billy Edwards, Hershel Sizemore, John Palmer, Tater Tate, with special guest Chubby Wise. Another highlight includes a fiery three fiddle instrumental version of the classic tune, “Liberty,” with Tater Tate, Joe Greene and Chubby Wise.

The Grascals will release their new CD, The Famous Lefty Flynn’s, on Rounder Records March 30, just a few days before the band hits the road as a part of Hank Williams Jr.’s Rowdy Friends Tour, an opportunity that will showcase bluegrass music to tens of thousands of music fans. As a guest on the CD, Williams also joins the band for a quintessential country/bluegrass version of “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome,” co-written by his dad, Hank Williams, and the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe.

The Famous Lefty Flynn’s features cutting-edge modern bluegrass delivered with a deep knowledge of and admiration for the work of the music’s founding fathers. The CD kicks off three-part harmonies featured in a rousing cover of “Last Train to Clarksville.” Terry Eldredge takes the lead in the infectious, fast-paced “Son of a Sawmill Man” – a straight-ahead bluegrass tune with room for solos by Kristin Scott Benson, banjo; Danny Roberts on mandolin; and fiddler Jeremy Abshire. The ballad “Satan and Grandma” follows, a powerful testimony to the strength of a righteous grandmother conveyed with perfect emotion by Jamie Johnson.

The life-affirming “Everytime” features Eldridge, and reminds listeners of new possibilities and adventures that could be just ahead. Like an old-time folk song, “Out Comes the Sun” paints a mysterious, foreboding picture of a lover. Terry Eldredge, with the help of a bass interlude by Terry Smith, sets the mood with this one. The instrumental “Blue Rock Slide” keeps that old-time bluegrass spirit front and center – in a more upbeat way – with solos and instrumental interplay in abundance.

The title track, written by Jamie Johnson and Morry Trent, is a story song, an outlaw’s tale, delivered convincingly by Eldridge. Another Grascals original, “My Baby’s Waiting on the Other Side” (written by Johnson, Smith and Roberts) with Jamie Johnson singing lead, is a barn-burner, fueled by three-part harmony and solos on fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. Steve Earle’s “My Old Friend the Blues” follows with its easy-going irony. The bluesy spirit continues with “Up This Hill and Down.” To close out the album, Jamie Johnson sings lead in the uplifting “Give Me Jesus.”

The Grascals rose to critical acclaim in 2005 when they won Emerging Artist of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards. This was only the beginning as they catapulted to the top of their genre, being named 2006 and 2007 Entertainers of the Year the following two years.

You can pre-order The Grascals “The Famous Lefty Flynn’s” for $9.99 via there web site for a limited time.

Hey, they say it really does look like a set of, well, er, uh, brand new strings.

That’s a reference to “No Strings Attached,” the new Rural Rhythm Records released by Brand New Strings, an up and coming bluegrass band with some veteran pickers in the bunch. The CD is packaged to look like a set of guitar strings.

“Seriously, when I opened it up, I thought it was a set of strings, that’s how good the art work is,” said Jim Moulton with CountryStarsOnline.

The CD, according to producer Steve Gulley is “real bluegrass from the real deal.”

Band members include Randall Massengill (lead vocals and guitar), Mike Ramsey (lead vocals and mandolin), Tim Tipton (bass), Stuart Wyrick (banjo) and Matt Leadbetter (resonator guitar).

In 2009, the group won the band competition at the Society for the Preservation of Blue Grass Music in America convention. That was a year ago, and the group spent most of the 2009 festival season on the road. Brand New Strings have several dates booked for this year to promote their new CD.
