D.C. bluegrass kingpin Bill Harrell dies

Bluegrass pioneer Bill Harrell died this week at his home in Davidisonville, Md. He had suffered a stroke on June 12 and had returned home after spending a week in the hospital.

Funeral services will be held Monday in Davidsonville. Condolences can be sent to 938 St. George Barber Road, Davidisonville, MD 21035.

Harrell had been a major figure in bluegrass for almost five decades. Like the Country Gentlemen, Buzz Busby, the Bluegrass Champs and Benny & Vallie Cain, he contributed greatly to the growth of bluegrass in the Washington, D.C. area….

Fred Robbins historic bluegrass festival pictures

Fred Robbins name may be familiar to some of you. Especially if you’re a die hard Bluegrass Unlimited fanatic. Fred has penned a couple of articles for Bluegrass Unlimited over the years, most notably a story about Fincastle 1966 Bluegrass Festival that appeared in the May 2003 edition.

Fred has also assembled a great collection of historic photo’s that he shot through the years. Recently he began scanning them into the computer and has painstakingly cleaned them up. Images in Fred’s collection include the 1972 Country Gentleman Indian Ranch Bluegrass Festival,…
