Whitetop Mountain Band clings to tradition

In the past few months, I reviewed a CD of parlor music with the title of Before Bluegrass. That description kept rolling through my mind with my first exposure to the Whitetop Mountain Band. Their sound from the Virginia mountains would certainly qualify as rural and rustic sounds — long before bluegrass ever rolled around.

The family band from Whitetop, Va., showcases what it does best on Loafer’s Dream, a new CD on the Mountain Roads Recordings label. …

Elkeville String Band releases CD

The Elkville String Band, from Wilkes County, North Carolina has released their first project “Over The Mountain” on the Mountain Roads Recordings label.

The Elkville String Band consists of Drake Walsh (fiddle and mandolin), Herb Key (guitar and singing), Bill Williams (harmony singing and bass), and Jeff Michael (banjo, fiddle, guitar, and singing). “Over The Mountain” features special guest Wayne Henderson on Lead Guitar.
